The western spirit imbued in Andrew as a child has always been the subject on his canvas. Branded a “portrait artist of objects”, Roda immortalizes the personalities of weathered boots, dusty saddles, vintage revolvers and even a classic car. Beyond their aesthetic appeal and craftsmanship, they bear the marks of their histories – each scar, ding and dent telling the tale of a lifetime lived. These subjects represent a nostalgic homage to a bygone era, and an admiration of the rugged individualism, unyielding determination, and unwavering sense of freedom it captured.
Embracing a contemporary twist on the traditional still life, Roda aims to capture the intricate details, realism, and spirit of the subjects while still maintaining a painterly flair to his technique. Bold colors, high contrast settings, and judicious use of negative space serve to spotlight these objects while giving them the space to breathe.
Roda is represented by King Galleries in Scottsdale, AZ and Sage Creek Gallery along Santa Fé’s historic Canyon Road. Roda has been included in several museum exhibitions, most recently the Couse-Sharp Historic Site’s “La Luz de Taos” in June, 2024. National and regional publications featuring his work include: Western Art Collector, Southwest Art Magazine, and Santa Fé Magazine.
